Experts from our Respiratory Theme have been working in collaboration with health teams in Nepal as part of a UK government Global Challenge project.

This animation is one of the ways that the project is helping to explain the risk factors and causes of COPD to local people.

Nepal is one of the most polluted environments in the world1and there is a high level of respiratory disease among its 30 million people.

In the capital city, Kathmandu, poor lung health is largely caused by smoking tobacco, and exposure to pollution from traffic and industry. However, more than 80% of the country’s population lives in rural areas of Nepal where a major cause of lung disease is the use of cooking stoves that burn biomass in poorly ventilated homes.

Respiratory doctors, scientists and engineers from the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre and the University of Nottingham have been working with Nepalese doctors, health professionals and development leaders since early 2019 to define, design and test practical interventions that could help to reduce the burden of chronic lung disease in the country. This animation is one of the ways that the message about pollution, lifestyle factors and COPD is being communicated.

You can read more about the whole project in our news article from March 2019.
