The Royal College of Physicians awards its Moxon medal every three years to a distinguished clinical researcher.

Professor Wei Shen Lim, a consultant respiratory physician at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and an honorary professor at the University of Nottingham, has research interests including community-acquired pneumonia and flu. He is also member of the Joint Committee on Vaccine and Immunisation.

The Moxon medal was founded in memory of Dr Walter Moxon FRCP (1836–86) with a sum of £515 8s 6d raised by subscription and given to the Royal College of Physicians shortly after his death. The income from the residue after the cost of erecting a bronze tablet in his memory at Guy’s Hospital had been met, is used for a triennial gold medal, awarded to a person (not restricted to British subjects) who has distinguished himself by observation and research in clinical medicine.

Previous winners include Sir Alexander Fleming, and Prof Sir John Bell.

The award is made by the College on the recommendation of Council and the medal is presented on the occasion of the Harveian Oration. The Trust’s funds have been supplemented by grants from the Sadleir Trust
