Professor Guru Aithal, Deputy Director of Nottingham BRC and Leader of the Gastrointestinal and Liver Disorders Theme, has a new role in advancing genomic medicine across the East of England, and the East Midlands.

He has been appointed as Medical Lead for the East Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (GMSA). Professor Aithal’s role includes highlighting the range of genomic tests that clinicians can make available for relevant groups of patients, thereby reducing inequality.

East GMSA is one of seven hubs in England, which combine to make the NHS’s National Genomic Medicine Service and serves around 8.3 million patients across the regions. The alliance brings together scientists, researchers and educators to help doctors use genomics in patient treatment.

It focuses on the diagnosis and monitoring of rare and inherited diseases, including haematological malignancies and cancers. The service is designated as a specialist national testing centre for rare genomic diseases in neurology and endocrinology.
