Professor Gordon Moran, professor of Gastroenterology and a leading member of our BRC’s GI & Liver Research Theme, has been recognised as one of the UK’s Top 100 Influential People 2026.

The award highlights people who are making exceptional contributions to their field and are making the world a better place.

Professor Moran has profoundly influenced the understanding and clinical management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). As academic and clinical lead for IBD at the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre, a leader in data driven trials within Nottingham Clinical Trials Unit at the University of Nottingham, and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, he is recognised nationally and internationally for excellence in research, clinical practice and education.

He has advanced non-invasive imaging techniques to measure inflammation and fibrosis, something that has significantly improved diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life for patients worldwide.

As testament to his influence as a highly productive researcher, Gordon has secured £12.5m in grants and published more than 130 high-impact papers, with over 5,000 citations in leading journals such as Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Nature Communications, and Gut. He is the author of the British Society of Gastroenterology 2025 IBD guidelines.

Alongside his academic work, he mentors medical trainees and maintains a demanding clinical workload, caring for around 1,500 complex IBD patients.

Professor Moran said: "I am thrilled to be in the Top 100 Influential People 2026. This award shines a spotlight on the most dynamic, persuasive, and powerful leaders from all sectors who are at the top of their game and have made a positive impact on society.

“This is an engaging insight into the many ways people are making a difference and shaping positive change, through entrepreneurial leadership, innovation and education or as champions of communities or the disadvantaged.

"I'm delighted that this award helps puts a sharp focus on the pioneering work of the Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre, and its impact on clinical practice and the quality of life of patients, as well as on the University of Nottingham's international reputation for medical innovation and education."
