Our BRC’s staff inspired the next generation of nurses, doctors, physiotherapists and research scientists during a visit to a Nottingham school’s Careers Day.

Nottingham BRC members Waheed Ashraf, Rose Farrand-Bentley, Lauren Taylor and Suzanne Miller were invited to attend Sherwood Junior School Careers Fair recently and bring to life careers in medicine and clinical research for children, who were aged between seven and 11.

The team were handed a classroom and held eight lessons for a total of 240 children. Our BRC researchers and managers had organised five activities for them; making DNA bracelets and ID badges, using interactive anatomy models featuring removable organs, looking through microscopes and playing the Operation board game.

Their presence and energy left a positive impression, according to Mrs Mykela Horton, Careers Day lead for Sherwood Junior School.

“This is the first year that the Nottingham BRC has attended the Careers Day at Sherwood Junior School and I believe it was a great success,” she commented.

“Our school's ethos is that we want every child to succeed and to be the very best they can be. It was wonderful to see the team from the Nottingham BRC help our children understand more about different careers and it was greatly appreciated.”

She added: “The team’s enthusiasm and positive spirit rubbed off on our children, and it helped make the learning experience productive and fun. Some children even commented that they were going to follow up on their learning.

“The children appreciated their class certificate for the scientific activities they had completed. Everyone was buzzing, and staff and pupils commented on what a great time they had."
