Nottingham BRC and Clinical Research Facility (CRF) are in the front line of research into the most effective treatments. Our experts are directly leading trials as part of our COVID-19 response and supporting NHS colleagues at Nottingham University Hospitals.

RECOVERY Trial

Led by Professor Wei Shen Lim, so far we have recruited 153 patients in Nottingham as part of the national roll-out of this trial to hospitals around the country.

The Randomised Evaluation of COVid-19 thERapY (RECOVERY) trial will provide doctors and health services with the information they need to determine the most effective treatments for COVID-19 patients.

This trial is comparing several different treatments which have been recommended for testing by the expert panel that advises the Chief Medical Officer in England. The treatments are:

  • Lopinavir-Ritonavir (commonly used to treat HIV)
  • inhaled Interferon (usually given by injection to treat multiple sclerosis, hepatitis C, and some blood disorders)
  • dexamethasone (a type of steroid, which is used in a range of conditions typically to reduce inflammation); or
  • hydroxychloroquine (a treatment for malaria)

One of these treatments, or no additional treatment, are being given to patients admitted to hospital who are confirmed as having COVID-19 or who are suspected of having the virus by the doctors treating them.

SNG001

Led by Professor Tim Harrison, this is a randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial to determine the safety and efficacy of inhaled SNG001 (IFN-β1a for nebulisation) for the treatment of patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection.

SNG001 is a formulation of IFN-beta, being developed by Synairgen, for direct delivery to the lungs via nebulisation, to treat and/or prevent LRT illness caused by respiratory viruses. It is an experimental drug not available outside of clinical trials.
