Our Strategy

Our main focus is on identifying and taking rapid advantage of new developments in the basic sciences and translating these into clinical practice.

Each research theme includes a specific strategy group including both basic and clinical scientists to ensure we identify opportunities and act on them. The Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) organises cross-theme events including sandpits and an annual scientific conference to allow further cross fertilisation of ideas between scientists and clinicians and between research themes.

Our approach

Our approach is multi-disciplinary: the discovery science underpinning our BRC extends beyond the biomedical sciences into other areas of research strengths, including trough our partnership with the University of Nottingham, the Schools of Pharmacy, Engineering, Computer Science, Social Sciences and Physics.

Our aim

Our aim is to make the Nottingham BRC one of the foremost centres for internationally competitive patient-based translational research. Our research across six themes is finding new solutions to some of the most common diseases that place a huge and increasing burden on individuals, families and society.

We will achieve this by:

  • supporting world-class translational research in each theme
  • establishing a comprehensive support structure to enable and support world class translational research
  • ensuring the public and patients are embedded within the BRC’s culture and at the heart of our research
  • refreshing our training environment through establishment of a new translational training scheme
  • prioritising support and investment into the BRC’s six themes
  • catalysing knowledge exchange and innovation and
ensuring our BRC is outward looking by supporting interactions with other key NIHR organisations, the Life Sciences and Medical Technology industries and internationally recognised research groups.

We will ensure the BRC provides a supportive environment for all staff, building on our institutional and departmental Athena Swan silver awards.
