World leaders in translating cutting-edge science into innovative solutions for gastrointestinal and liver disorders
Digestive diseases account for 13% of all deaths in the UK. In addition, functional gastrointestinal disorders affect 11% of the population, impacting on people’s work and social lives.
Liver disease is the only major cause of mortality and morbidity in the UK that has risen in the past four decades. It is the third most common cause of premature death.
Our vision is to translate our world-class discovery research in microbiology, physiology, metabolism and physical sciences into clinically important new tests and treatments, in close collaboration with industry partners.
Discovery science: the Gastrointestinal and Liver Disorders theme
Our research embeds discovery science within three focused translational research areas, each of which has an outstanding track record of discovery and innovation.
Our research areas are:
- Gastrointestinal and liver infections: focuses on C difficile, viral hepatitis and H pylori
- Disorders of gastrointestinal physiology and liver metabolism: includes specific areas of neurogastroenterology, inflammatory bowel disease, metabolic liver disease
- Innovative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) methodologies: focuses on chronic liver diseases in collaboration with the imaging theme.
